Open (minor)

  • Open Glock 17 with a G34 barrel, an SJC side mounted C-more, 13# recoil spring, and Dawson magwell. using ETS, 140mm and 170mm mags with 125gr BlB loads.

Third match of this system and from the last 2, worked reasonably well.

Stage 1

  • Simple route, middle section shot on the move, and the steel all up close near the end to help for the tight round count.
  • Executing worked out fine with no snags in execution.
  • Good, appropriate tempo for the wide range of target distances.
  • Would’ve been great except for the mike on the very first target (too much left bias for the no-shoot).
  • 6th out of 62 (! despite the mike)

Stage 2

  • 9 shots for the 6 steel; saying it again: 1 for 1.
  • Good playing catchup – on the move for the middle, ripping on the last array, then slowing for the no-shoots.
  • Clean, 12th

Stage 3

  • Good start – the extra on the steel isn’t to makeup but to drive it down faster so the one behind it is available quicker.
  • I realize I’m a bit slow to start on the middle array so I sped up.
  • Last array goes better than the first.
  • Mike on the very first (WIDE OPEN) target.
  • 28th

Stage 4

  • 1 only per target.
  • Clean, 7th.

The Good

  • Stage 4
    • Fast and clean
  • Stage 1
    • Fast but not clean, yet good placement
  • Good, appropriate shot tempo

Needs Improvement

  • Steel 1 for 1
  • Can’t explain the mikes on the relatively easy targets – might change back to the G17 barrel instead of the 34.

Finished 7th out of 59 and 2nd out of 7 in Open.

2G HSC, 3-23-19

March 24, 2019

Open Division

  • Open Glock 17 with a G34 barrel, an SJC side mounted C-more, 13# recoil spring, and Dawson magwell. using ETS, 140mm and 170mm mags with 125gr BlB loads.
  • Saiga 12 – Venom dot, Remington Target (1200fps), Heavy Dove (1250fps), Hornady American Gunner low recoil slugs and Remington Managed Recoil Buckshot

Stage 3

  • 3 into the house to start, then 1 more (mainly headshots) a few steps up.
  • Run up to the transition and take the remaining paper (first 2 on the move as I come in).
  • Pistol hiccup in the end was failure to go into battery, so I racked the slide. On inspection, the jacked round had a high primer – which had no bearing on why it didn’t go into battery.
  • Grab SG and run to the first position.
  • Run to last position for remaining steel.
  • As I review the run, it probably would’ve been faster to shoot the 4 on the right from the second position as they still were in the 180 from there.
  • 2nd out of 19

Stage 4

  • Pistol goes ok and planned about as well as I could. Only issue was the dot was weak and almost invisible while shooting the steel at the end.
  • With the SG: slugs on white paper and buck on the poppers.
  • Good thing I brought 2 extra mags of slugs and buck each for the special targets, as I needed it for the left popper.
  • 5th

Stage 1

  • New battery on the Cmore for the Open 17 courtesy of Ron and the dot is alive again.
  • Pistol could’ve been better; too many extras on steel, needs to be 1 for 1. At least I didn’t need to reload.
  • SG also could’ve been better. Always 1 for 1.
  • Clean, 2nd.

Stage 2

  • Running the bases
  • Figured running the full circle with the SG would be slower, so I start with the pistol.
  • Leaving immediately then drawing while running to first seemed quicker than drawing and shooting the first target from home flat footed.
  • SG goes fairly well until the feed failure near the end (fixed by racking).
  • 3rd

The Good

  • Stage planning – not just me, but also discussing the plan with the squad
  • Pistol speed was good – I think the Open 17 allows for faster splits than the CO 34.
  • General pistol and SG work

Needs Improvement

  • Steel 1 for 1 (pistol and SG)
  • SG splits

Finished 3rd out of 19 overall and 1st out of 3 in Open.

PCC

  • PSA-Franken JP PCC with JP OS (BCG+SCSS), Bushnell TRS-25 dot and using 125gr BlB loads.

Need to get some long gun practice in for MG Nats in a few weeks. Since I shot pistol last Tuesday, today I figured, would be good for PCC.

Stage 1

  • I shot PCC at the GTR Hosefest, but not with my own PCC. So this is the first time shooting it in awhile (priming the excuse).
  • Splits look good in the beginning then slow down in the middle as I shoot the left on the move so I can position for the right target. Also slow down for the no-shoot.
  • Mike on the far left-most target (the one I shot 3 times). PCC is a bouncy system. (aaaaand there’s the excuse)
  • 19th out of 59

Stage 2

  • Good speed, good splits, and shooting on the move.
  • Clean, 12th

Stage 3

  • Haven’t shot, nor practiced, or dryfired, so my reload isn’t quick. I have to shoot head-shots on the maxtraps.
  • At least it’s clean; 18th.

Stage 4

  • As fast as I could run it.
  • 11th

The Good

  • Stages 2 and 4
    • As fast as I could run the stages – good splits, no wasted movement, shoot, scoot, and go.

Needs Improvement

  • Dryfire and reload practice – a given
  • PSA lower is ‘sticky’ on mags, should probably look into another Glock lower.
  • Keep on working on fitness and agility

Finished 17th out of 59 and 6th out of 8 in PCC.

March 19, 2019

Open (minor)

  • Open Glock 17 with a G34 barrel, an SJC side mounted C-more, 13# recoil spring, and Dawson magwell. using ETS, 140mm and 170mm mags with 125gr BlB and 124gr BB loads.

This is this system’s first match, which I had hastily put together this weekend. The lower is the old Open G34 with the side mounted C-more. I took off the rear sight of the G17 so it could go on the G34 lower and instead of the original 4.7″ barrel, I replaced it with a new G34 barrel (hence why it’s sticking out). My intent is to get a threaded G17 barrel so I can put a comp on it to complete it as an Open gun (but that will probably wait until after Nationals). Despite being handicapped shooting minor against the normally major Open guns, for now I need to run the gun and get used to it for Nationals. The G34 CO will be backup.

Stage 2

  • Little trouble with the poppers, but I clean for the rest.
  • 24th out of 49

Stage 3

  • Steel 1 for 1.
  • 3 on the tuxedos/zebras as I learned from the Florida Open.
  • Speeding up on the paper when I can.
  • 11th

Stage 4

  • Slow for the first 2 low, then sped up for the upper wide open 2.
  • About as fast as I could run it.
  • 9th

Stage 1

  • Again, I just shot the plan and this is about as fast as I could run it.
  • Unfortunately, 2 mikes on 2 targets.
  • 17th

The Good

  • Stage 2
    • Slow, deliberate — ‘getting to know you’. Even though it’s the same lower I’d shot before, the new upper makes it different.
  • Stage 3
    • Clean, and now faster; getting better.
  • Stage 4
    • Best stage for the night.
  • Stage 1
    • Great time but offset by some mikes.

Needs Improvement

  • First stage jitters and not shooting a pistol in 2 weeks except for testing = steel not 1 for 1 on the get go.
  • While I do get faster as the night goes, I get too fast and mike on the last stage. Great time, but the mikes get me. At least I know I can run it fast.

Finished 17th out of 49 and 5th out of 6 in open.

3G Manatee, 3-9-19

March 11, 2019

Open Division

  • G34 CO – Fastfire 3, 13# recoil spring, ETS mags, 124gr BB RN ammo
  • Saiga 12 – Venom dot, Remington Target (1200fps), Heavy Dove (1250fps), Fiocchi and Hornady American Gunner low recoil slugs
  • 18″ NFSC – 18″ New Frontier Side Charging upper on the M&P lower with JP trigger and SCSS, Strike Eagle 1-8, offset mini-dot, JP Eliminator, SCSS, Armaspec magwell, Federal 55gr and Frontier 69gr ammo

Stage 2

  • Start with the Saiga loaded up with bird in the 12 rounder for the 9 steel. 1 for 1.
  • Reload with a 10 rounder loaded with 4 slugs – 2 borrowed Fiocchis on top and 2 American Gunners under. Burned the bird, shot the Fiocchi, first round hit.
  • I load the unloaded rifle with PPU 69s and the first 4 go quick, 1 for 1. I move to the next position and have trouble with the last at 325, so much so I re-position so I can kneel. 10 shots total for the 4, 6 for the last. Ran out of gas, shooting bent over at the second position. From kneeling, I’m able to take the 325 on the second shot. Either I should have knelt straight out, or get fitter so I can shoot bent over longer.
  • 18th out of 55

Stage 3

  • Rifle could use tad speeding up, but it’s clean,
  • SG could also use some speeding up but the real kicker is not aiming on the last popper that takes me 3 to drop.
  • 13th

Stage 4

  • Using the side-dot on the rifle on a dare. Could use some speeding up on the splits, but still clean.
  • Missed the sequence of the first 4 pistol paper.
  • For the pistol, it’s 7 paper and 9 steel – 23 rounds. Even for a pistol stage, 23 with a 28 round pistol is a bit tight, given the star. Maybe if I’d:
    • Fully loaded the mag: I count 26 shots then run dry – the mag holds 27
    • Barney’d up: with the mag downloaded by 1 and no barney, I’m actually starting with 26
    • Hit 1 for 1
    • Planned for a reload after shooting the first 5 paper.
  • Pistol is slow, need some speeding up
  • Clean, 15th.

Stage 5

  • Run to the rifle for the mostly head shot array. I’m sucked into the head shots I fail to speed up on the second wide open target. Need some speeding up, but it’s clean.
  • Wheels fall off when the Hornady slug gets stuck and fails to load as the maxtrap activates. I shove the bolt in and burn the slug into the berm and continue (a reminder of how well the Fiocchi’s work).
  • I speed up on the pistol to try to make up for the slug debacle. Even ‘sped up’ my pistol shooting needs even more speed.
  • 35th

Stage 1

  • Hiccup on the last popper and I do the missed steel 2 step.
  • Lost the dot on the pistol while shooting the first paper array. (clean)
  • SG goes quick as I try for more speed.
  • Rifle is standing, unsupported and goes ok – probably my best for off-hand shooting (7 shots for the 5, with the 2 extra on #4). Scope set to 2x.
  • 15th

The Good

  • LR rifle despite that last 325
  • Off hand rifle on Stage 1
  • SG work on Stage 1
  • Stage 4
    • short rifle work
    • pistol steel
  • Stage 1
    • rifle 1 for 1 on steel
    • SG on flying clays
    • pistol steel

Needs Improvement

  • Not one stage went perfectly today…
  • Stage 2 – not taking the second position kneeling
    • practice kneeling and getting in and out of it quickly
  • Stage 3
    • quicker rifle splits
    • aiming (taking the last popper for granted)
  • Stage 4 – taking the round count for granted (no need to plan a reload; also quicker rifle splits)
  • Stage 5 – get some Fiocchi slugs
  • Stage 1 – rushing the last popper so I miss – never rush, just do it quickly

Finished 20th out of 55 overall and 12th out of 21 in Open.

GTR Hosefest 2019

March 6, 2019

PCC Division

  • Borrowing Lee’s MBX PCC:
    • 14.5″ barrel with pinned and welded comp
    • MBX short-stroke system tuned for Fiocchi 115gr ammo
    • Vortex Sparc II red dot
    • Top rail mounted green laser + light combo
    • MBX extended mags of 57, 47 and 36 round capacities (I would use the 57 round mag for majority of the stages)

Stage 1

  • Start holding inert rifle aimed at no-shoot target, gun staged on table.
  • This is actually the second run as my first was not picked up by the timer (no time, re-shoot).
  • 12th

Stage 2

  • And the match lives up to its name! Fun stage, though I had the suspicion throughout I was hitting the low hard cover, hence a few extras. I actually had 0 hard cover hits.
  • 17th

Stage 3

  • Standards; reload between arrays. I used the 36 round mag to start and reloaded with a 22 rounder.
  • Clean, 39th.

Stage 4

  • Field of steel, memory stage. Mostly 1 for 1 and some of them were edge hits (as I only saw part of the plate).
  • Decisive, deliberate, I ran and shot my plan.
  • 6th

Stage 5

  • John Wick named stage, gotta be fun…
  • I debated starting by opening the first door then scooting to the left for the first 3. It made sense for a pistol, but not so, I thought for the PCC. It didn’t seem to slow me down.
  • About as fast as I could run and shoot it.
  • 15th

Stage 6

  • Unloaded start, 20 round stage, so I use the 47 round mag downloaded to 44.
  • I planned to use the green laser for the low port at the end. Problem was, I couldn’t see the laser dot. Nothing. As I revert to the red dot, it’s there, as I see it through the tube, but too late now. I planned this stage on something I’d actually never done before – using the green laser in broad daylight with zero practice.
  • 40th

Stage 7

  • Memory stage with 30 yard shots. Memory stage from hell, as our squad put it. But I worked out a plan, made it simple, and rehearsed it while other shooters where running.
  • As with the plates on Stage 4, I was decisive and deliberate.
  • Clean, with good time; 8th.

Stage 8

  • A ‘normal’ stage with only 20 rounds.
  • I run it quick and shoot through the swingers as quickly as possible.
  • 9 seconds, but mike on the second swinger.
  • 22nd

The Good

  • Stage 4 and 7
    • planning memory stages
    • decisive and deliberate, no second guessing – relies on a solid plan
  • Adapting to a borrowed gun quickly.
  • Splits and transitions.
  • Speeding up in between shooting.
  • Shooting PCC again, only because of the high round count and I don’t want to reload.
  • The match felt good, and shot as best as my abilities.
  • Zero equipment issues – a gun that runs and is reliable is worth its cost.

Needs Improvement

  • Felt sleepy and sluggish at the beginning as this is the first time shooting this gun.
  • Don’t try something new (Stage 6 and the green laser) at a (semi) major match. (I’m spending $$$ on a hotel and food, it feels major)
  • Shrugging off Stage 6 and coming back with a good Stage 7.
  • My own PCC needs some improvements.

As I learn and get used to the new gun throughout the day, I learn but it takes probably up until the 4th stage (half the match!) to get used to it. I felt I shot a good match, despite the slow start and Stage 6. Finished 15th out of 81 overall and 7th out of 20 in PCC.
