USPSA, WAC, 12-27-20 (PCC)

December 28, 2020

PCC Division

  • PSA-JP 9mm PCC
    • Lower: PSA 9mm Glock lower, CMC 9mm trigger, Taccom magwell, JP 9mm Heavy SCSS and Magpul MOE SL stock
    • Upper: JP BCG, JP HG, JP brake, Anderson receiver, KVP barrel
    • Vortex Strikefire red dot and SIG light-(red) laser combo
    • 125gr Gallant and 115gr Xtreme RN loads (3.2/4.0gr Titegroup, 1.1OAL)
    • ETS 40 round mag

Stage 5

  • Unloaded start so I use the 27 round TF extended mag. With all the extras, I run it dry in the end.
  • Clean run, 25th out of 64.

Stage 6

  • Less extras, with a bit of trigger freeze on the first 2.
  • 14th

Stage 1 Classifier

  • 1 each, reload, repeat.
  • 20th

Stage 2

  • Ran as planned but really should’ve taken the left-most target through the port on retreat to the last position.
  • 24th.

Stage 3

  • Ran as planned and looked good, but mike on the first ‘in-between’ the popper and maxtrap.
  • 24th.

Stage 4

  • Ran with the Gallants for the first 4 stages, then switched to Xtremes for these last 2. I used some leftovers that may not have had enough oomph to eject, hence the first jam.
  • 24th.

The Good

  • Stage 3 plan and execution despite the mike.
  • Keeping the gun up between short movement, and raising it back up before getting into position if I do lower it.
  • Quicker splits on no-shoots

Needs Improvement

  • Check the barrel/comp for leading as  it my be affecting accuracy.

Finished 19th out of 68 overall and 3rd out of 9 in PCC.

PCC Division

  • PSA-JP 9mm PCC
    • Lower: PSA 9mm Glock lower, CMC 9mm trigger, Taccom magwell, JP 9mm Heavy SCSS and Magpul MOE SL stock
    • Upper: JP BCG, JP HG, JP brake, Anderson receiver, KVP barrel
    • Vortex Strikefire red dot and SIG light-(red) laser combo
    • 125gr Galant RN loads (3.2gr Titegroup, 1.1OAL)
    • ETS 40 round mag

Moved the SIG light-laser to the 9 0’clock position.

Stage 1

  • Ran this backwards from everyone else as they started where I finished. Starting ‘in the end’ allowed the whole back array to be pre-indexed rather than finding the index on the run up.
  • Clean run, 14th out of 38.

Stage 2

  • 1 extra on steel but otherwise pretty good.
  • 6th

Stage 3

  • The whole stage was visible from this angle, so tried something new.
  • Unloaded start, and I use the 22 round TTI extended mag but downloaded to 21 for the 16 rounds.
  • 16th

Stage 4

  • Ran as planned, but on the last array, should’ve taken the left target first on the move, then swept right, avoiding the wide transition to the right-most target.
  • 9th.

The Good

  • Clean match and malfunction free.

Needs Improvement

  • Need to move quicker between positions.
  • Quicker splits on no-shoots.
  • Keep the PCC horizontal when moving, if possible, instead of dropping to low ready as I do now. Keeping it up makes it ready for the next position.

Finished 10th out of 38 overall and 3rd out of 7 in PCC.

USPSA Area 6 MG, 12/17-20/20

December 21, 2020

Open Division

  • Open Edge in .40SW using 155gr Xtreme FN loads.
    • 155gr Xtreme plated flat nose
    • 6.5gr WSF
    • 7.5gr Longshot
  • 18″ NFSC – 18″ New Frontier Side Charging upper on the M&P lower with JP trigger and SCSS, Strike Eagle 1-8, Sightmark offset mini-dot, Rolling Thunder comp, PPU 5.56 55gr, PPU and Freedom Munitions 69gr ammo.
  • DA Vepr 12 – Bushnell Big Dot, DA 12 and 20 round mags, using Remington and Winchester AA 1200, Winchester 1255, 1300, Federal High Bird 1330, Federal Truball 1300fps slugs and Fiocchi 1300fps slugs.

Stage 4

  • Start with strong hand holding clay and weak hand holding SG.
  • Nice time for a jam, as the middle clay flies. 15 shots in, this was a Remington 1200 shell.
  • 19th out of 68.

Stage 5

I left the camera running after Stage 4, and by the time we got to 5, the battery was dead (about 2 hours continuous recording).

  • Tac-bay, starting with rifle on 2 plate racks at 10 and 2 o’clock at about 50yds. We used the posts at the cover’s corners for support, and the odd angle of the square posts didn’t make for an easy hold. Started on the left relatively easy and almost if not 1 for 1, but when I moved to the right, my hand was partially obscuring the scope. Adjusted the hold and finished the rifle portion. Prone on the bipod may have been the better option, but not with my open holster.
  • Dump the rifle and get the SG for 2 slugs from the left post. It was possible to take the slugs any of the 3 downrange boxes, but no support was available from any, so I opted to use the post for support. 4 slugs in and only 1 hit.
  • It gets even worse as I run to the first box and accidentally release the mag. I pick it up and take forever to re-seat it (it’s the 20 rounder, with 16 in it).
  • I waste a  few rounds on the first stationary Polish plate rack and run dry on the second, forcing a reload. With 12 rounds left, I also run dry with 1 steel left standing.
  • 59th

Stage 6

  • Bus bay- start with pistol on steel and activator of swinger and clamshell; clean.
  • Pickup shotgun for 3 slugs at 50, 75 and 100. 2 connect with the 6 in the 20 rounder. With the 14 left I finish off the 14 steel and clays as I move right.
  • Dump the SG and pickup the rifle for prone with bipod shooting under the spool for steel at 80, 140, 250 and 320. 1 for 1. Proceed to car on the left for the same through the rear window. I used the bag aid in support.
  • 33rd

Stage 7

  • Start on the right with SG topped off with 1330 bird, 3 slugs, then all bird for the first clay and 3 paper.
  • Finish off the rest of the clays and available steel, then the rest with the pistol, including the swinger.
  • 28th

Day 2

Stage 8

  • Good splits with the rifle but transition between targets needs speeding up.
  • SG plan is good with slug mix, but hesitated during the reload with the slug topped mag.
  • Pistol is good on the relatively far steel and swingers.
  • 18th

Stage 1

  • 5 slugs in the 5 round mag – mix of Fiocchi and Truball. I hit on the last 2 with Truball.
  • Reload with the 20 is easier with the bolt locked back.
  • Few extras with the SG but within the cushion.
  • Climb up the connex for the 4 steel at 200, 450, 520 and 630. 16/17 shots for the 4. I was told I was shooting low. I need to verify velocity for better results with Strelok.
  • 40th

Stage 2

  • Ran as planned.
  • A better plan was to start on the right front window, go to the left window, and finish and dump the rifle in the house. Work your way back near the door with the pistol to end. Doing so took out the hard lean on the left and shooting through the first port.
  • 12th

Stage 3

  • Ran as planned.
  • 9th – strong finish!

The Good

  • Stages 2 and 3 – pistol+rifle stages, showing results of work with pistol and rifle/pcc these past few months
  • Pistol and rifle no issues and shot clean.
  • Rifle out to 300 yards.

Needs Improvement

  • Easier to load SG with stick mags
  • SG slugs at 50yds onwards
  • LR past 300 – Chrono to verify velocity
  • Retention holster for Open Edge or a Carry Optics pistol with comp for when I need to go prone.

Shot the match as Staff on Thursday and Friday, then worked as an embedded RO on Squad 6 (great squad!).  Finished 24th out of 68 and 15th out of 29 in Open.

Thanks to Keith for picking up a Luth Stock and DaVinci cert from the prize table.

3G Manatee, 12-12-20

December 14, 2020

Open Division

  • Open Edge in .40SW using 155gr Xtreme FN loads.
    • 155gr Xtreme plated flat nose
    • 6.5gr WSF
    • 7.5gr Longshot
    • 1.155OAL (showing 1.156 below)
  • 18″ NFSC – 18″ New Frontier Side Charging upper on the M&P lower with JP trigger and SCSS, Strike Eagle 1-8, Sightmark offset mini-dot, Rolling Thunder comp, Norma 55gr and Freedom Munitions 69gr ammo.
  • DA Vepr 12 – Bushnell Big Dot, DA 12 and 20 round mags, using Remington 1200, 1235 (HDCP), 1330 XLR and Winchester AA 1200 and 1300fps loads

Stage 2

  • 20 rounder runs on candy-striped rounds from 1200 to 1330.
  • For rifle, engage 200 and 300yd steel from 3 positions on the barricade with at least one being a port.
  • First position on the barricade’s main support beam is 1 for 1.
  • 2nd position is shaky and have trouble connecting with the 300 so I move on,
  • Port position is also 1 for 1 so I go back to the 300 on the second position and take it immediately.
  • 21st out of 40.

Stage 3

  • 12 rounder to start on the steel, then reload while moving.
  • Burn the chambered bird on the steel, then 2 slugs, and the last steel.
  • 7.5gr Longshot loads work and the Open Edge runs.
  • 5th

Stage 4

  • Pistol continues to run on the new loads and is clean.
  • SG goes well until I forget that last plate but see it as I’m dumping it in the barrel.
  • Rifle is also clean.
  • 13th

Stage 5

  • Forgot to turn on the side dot. All 6 are alphas.
  • Should’ve sequenced the pistol L-R or R-L, not middle-L-R.
  • 12 for 10 with the SG.
  • 15th

Stage 1

  • Pistol about as fast as I could go.
  • Rifle is 1 for 1. But while the pistol portion took 12 seconds, shooting the 6 steel twice at around 100yds took  50 seconds (!!!).
  • 22nd

The Good

  • All guns running
  • Stage 3, 5th place
  • Rifle verified out to 300.
  • Pistol accuracy good.

Needs Improvement

  • LR rifle speed – I can hit, just need to hit faster.

Finished 17th out of 40 and 8th out of 18 in Open.

USPSA, WAC, 12-8-20 (OPEN)

Open Division

Open Division

  • Open Edge in .40SW using 155gr Xtreme FN loads.
    • 155gr Xtreme plated flat nose
    • 6.5gr WSF
    • 7.0gr Longshot
    • 1.19OAL (same as Bayou)

Ran out of Power Pistol so I used up some remaining WSF (about 60 rounds) and started using some Longshot I’ve had for a while. No one uses Longshot so I don’t have much anecdotal reference for formulas; I’m now scraping the bottom of the barrel during this shortage. From the Hodgdon site I estimated 7.0gr would put me at around 1100fps or 170pf with the 155s.

While monitoring the last Power Pistol loads, I’d randomly weigh the charge to verify that it had enough and found that what I thought was 7.0gr of Power Pistol was actually 6.6gr.

Stage 1

  • First up, using the WSF loads…
  • Shot the far paper too fast and miked the second shot.
  • Everything else to plan and some in the middle on the move.
  • Clean run, 13th out of 50.

Stage 2

  • Unloaded start, gun on one barrel and all mags used on the other barrel.
  • Looks like a good start but I actually edged the very first no-shoot.
  • Steel 1 for 1 while on the move.
  • 2 shots in for the 3 shot at the swinger.
  • 13th

Stage 3

  • Switched out the WSF loads for the Longshot loads, and FTE(ject) on the first shot. Runs ok for the rest of the run.
  • Extras on the plate rack.
  • 21st

Stage 4

  • The one FTE from the previous stage has now multiplied. It’s now a single shot. There’s a lot of flash coming out of the comp (more than the WSF loads), but if there’s not enough powder to cycle the gun, we get FTEs. I’m on the high end of one Longshot recipe, and the low end of another. But both have OALs at 1.125-1.135 compared to mine at 1.190. I should be ok going up tp 7.3gr for the extra power to cycle reliably.
  • After the reload, gun runs fine. Both mags had the Longshot loads and I led with the 170, so I’m guessing mag drag.
  • 29th.

The Good

  • WSF at 6.5gr is good to go.
  • Finding out what’s wrong now than later.

Needs Improvement

  • Time crunch and trying to save ammo so I don’t test the new loads. It worked for the WSFs and almost did for the Longshots. Will raise the charge to 7.3.

Finished 17th out of 50 overall and 8th out of 11 in Open.

USPSA, WAC, 12-4-20 (CO)

December 5, 2020

Carry Optics Division

  • Glock 34 CO with Burris Fastfire 3 using TTI 22rnd extended mag and Magpul 21rnd mag using 125gr Gallant RN loads (3.2gr Titegroup, 1.1OAL)

Back to Carry Optics after shooting only Open and PCC. Need some pistol practice for Area 6 MG in a few weeks and I might run the G34 CO for the pistol, as it worked out fine at the last HSC 3gun match.

Stage 2

  • Virginia count, 3 per target.
  • Clean run, 11th out of 26

Stage 3

  • Memory stage, so I picked the spot where I could shoot most of them, then pick off what’s left. Except backwards.
  • Clean, 10th.

Stage 4

  • Steel down on the first shot.
  • FTE(ject) as I go into the second position.
  • Clean, 13th

Stage 1

  • Plan was great, minimum movement, and reload timed during the move.
  • Targets were at about 20-25yds, some with no-shoots.
  • More FTEs bookending the run.
  • 2 mikes, 18th.

The Good

  • Mostly clean, up until the last stage.
  • Gun ran, up until the last 2 stages.
  • Good plans on relatively difficult stages.
  • Addressed last Tuesday’s issue of getting hungry on the last stage by eating lunch later at around 2:30pm.

Needs Improvement

  • Gun ran up until the last 2 stages – either ammo or it’s dirty. So rather than upping the powder for what’s supposed to be a PCC load, it’s easier to do a quick clean and light lube. Another argument for the ammo being fine: it ran fine for 2 stages using the same ammo.
  • Brass is ejecting forward – it’s hitting the Fastfire and bouncing forward; which isn’t good for the Fastfire. Recoil spring? Ejector? After some quick searching the problem is prevalent enough to have a name: Glock BTF (brass to face). It’s not that the brass is ejecting into the optic, the optic is actually smacking the brass forward as the slide moves forward. Will continue to research…

Finished 13th out of 26 overall and 2nd out of 7 in CO.

After some issues with the rifle in the last rifle and 3gun matches at HSC, I had the rifle deep cleaned at SW and (re-)zeroed it last night.

Started off with 55gr at 50yds to get a 50yd zero. With 69gr ammo at a premium, I’ll start with 55 and finalize with 69.

55gr Lake City 223

69gr Freedom Munitions

The first shot is lowest on the paper as I start out on box 3.

Walked it up and left to get it in the ‘3’ box. The 2 above is at 100yds for 200yd zero verification with Freedom Munitions 69gr ammo from a fresh box.

Verification of Freedom Munitions 69gr at 100yd for 200yd zero on box 4, above.

Next, I check POI at 100yds with 55g Norma Tac:

The group over the paper is 55gr at 100yds, about 2.5″ high. The 4 shot group in the ‘2’ box is at 50yds. So at 100yds, using 55gr ammo, favor low.

Next verify with PPU 69gr at 100yds for 200yd (good to go):

Back to the fresh box Freedom Munitions for a final check at 50 and 100, both good to go.

USPSA, WAC, 12-1-20 (PCC)

December 2, 2020

PCC Division

  • PSA-JP 9mm PCC
    • Lower: PSA 9mm Glock lower, CMC 9mm trigger, Taccom magwell, JP 9mm Heavy SCSS and Magpul MOE SL stock
    • Upper: JP BCG, JP HG, JP brake, Anderson receiver, KVP barrel
    • Vortex Strikefire red dot and SIG light-(red) laser combo
    • 125gr Galant RN loads (3.2gr Titegroup, 1.1OAL)
    • ETS 40 round mag

Took off the Meopta and mounted the Vortex Strikefire previously on the Saiga. Zeroed at 25yds. Also mounted the SIG light-(red)laser combo at the 6 o’clock position.

Cold night tonight; wearing pants forearm gaiters and my jacket when not shooting.

Stage 1

  • Forgot to turn on the hatcam, so no video for stage 1.
  • Start on the left and on the far paper with a no-shoot in between.
  • Shoot the 2 up close on the move out to the middle position for 2 small poppers and a no-shoot 2-stack through the port.
  • Move right for 1 more through another port, then end on 2 up close and 2 more down at the end.
  • Mike on the far left target (second engage).
  • 5th out of 35

Stage 2

  • Good splits throughout, and appropriate as I slow down for the no-shoots.
  • Clean, 6th.

Stage 3

  • Splits consistent throughout.
  • 3rd

Stage 4

  • Starts great on the 1 small popper and the 3 far paper.
  • Up until now, steel has been 1 for 1. Lots of extras.
  • Shooting on the move for the last few targets,
  • I purposefully shot the no-shoot last and took my time. Yet I still hit the no-shoot and got the requisite mike. I think I was getting cold, tired and hungry by this time.
  • 18th

The Good

  • Stages 2 and 3 – clean, good planning and execution
  • Great splits, even on no-shoot obscured targets. This is the first time shooting the Gallant loads with this system and it allows for good splits.
  • Zero ok for WAC and good enough to avoid no-shoots

Needs Improvement

  • Changed up the routine going to the WAC… For a few weeks now, I’d have a small snack before the match, stopping by for a small burger at Wendy’s or Chik-fil-a nuggets. Nothing heavy, just a snack. I didn’t tonight and was hungry and tired at the last stage. Fruit or banana would’ve been good as well.
  • Light-laser location needs re-examining as I found it in the way at times. 9 o’clock (original location) may be it as the rail space it’s using now would be better off for the bipod during zeroing or if I really need to use a bipod at a match.

Finished 6th out of 35 overall and 2nd out of 5 in PCC.
