Did the Gig Pit for the first time. Traditionally, it included a roll in a sand pit after an ice water dunk. No Gig Pit last year because of COVID, but this year, the ice water dunk was back. With no roll in the sand, more of us did it this year, apparently. Had to stay wet/damp for the rest of the match (no changing or drying off).

Stage 1

  • First to start, and I thought I had a plan and I shot that plan. Thing is, I didn’t account for a target. It was behind this barrel:
    Capture
  • Notes:
    • Start was holding the buoy  and I thought I had to use it to activate the stomp pad. It was light, and it did activate, but the sure thing was to just drop it and step on the pad.
    • Forward targets could have been shot from the ramp/platform, so if I started from the back, I could’ve saved travel, and seen the one I missed.
  • Great time, but 2 mikes and an FTSA to start – 111th out of 145 overall and 19th of 27 in PCC.

Stage 2

  • Start lying on the hammock, hands crossed on chest, and I thought it took forever to get out. The video shows it wasn’t too bad.
  • Clean, 42nd overall and 14th in PCC.

Stage 3

  • Start was wrists above shoulders, so holding the PCC shouldered, muzzle high met the requirement.
  • Shooting from the back allowed me to skip the middle position. Waiting for the maxtrap felt like forever.
  • Miked the right swinger, even shooting 4 at it.
  • At the last position, I thought moving up would allow a better shot at the left swinger. Instead, it threw the timing off.
  • 78th overall and 15th in PCC.

Stage 4

  • The dreaded rope swing. And it was over before I knew it as I glided across.
  • Lots of extras on the last small popper as I rush.
  • 4 on the lower open target? More extras.
  • 63rd overall and 16th in PCC.

Stage 5

No video as I apparently forget to turn on the camera.

  • Start on the platform, gun on the low barrels in front, touching the eagle on the flag.
  • Low port and taking it bent over kneeling, I’m able to go pretty quickly on all of the targets, except for 1 small popper behind a barrel. It takes me forever to get into position.
    • The better plan was to get off the platform where you were now a bit lower, and in better position to see all the targets.
      • Always check other locations for better positions, including getting down on low positions.
  • Run uprange to finish off on the last.
  • 103rd overall and 21st in PCC.

Stage 6

  • No drama, finally.
  • 41st overall and 12th in PCC.

Stage 7

  • Muzzle touching the right side of the port, weak hand on the opposite. I rested the muzzle on, instead of just the side of the muzzle touching. It would’ve been ready to shoot as the muzzle would’ve been clear.
  • Poppers on the move.
  • Extras and waiting for the swinger.
  • 38th overall and 12th in PCC.

Stage 8

  • Longest shot with that small popper, 1 for 1. I remarked I should’ve shot Talladega with this gun instead.
  • All other steel 1 for 1.
  • 20th overall and 5th in PCC.
  • Worked as staff on this stage.

The Good

  • Stage 8
    • Best placement at 20th
    • Steel 1 for 1, including 1 relatively long at a small popper.
    • Shot the plan.
    • Even after 7 stages, saved the best for last.
  • Stage 7
    • 2nd best placement at 38th
    • Notwithstanding the wait on the swinger, still not too bad.
  • Best year for physical challenges: Gig Pit, rope swing.

Needs Improvement

  • Need to plan every target – where, when, and how.
  • Look at all possible positions, including getting down and dirty,
  • Keep working on fitness, strength, speed and agility.

Finished overall at 56th (38th last year) out of 145,13th out of 27 in PCC and 4th out of 6 in B-class.

Gig Pit participants were in for raffle for a gun or PRIMERS. Got lucky and was drawn first, to which I chose PRIMERS. Thanks to the WAC, match sponsors and co-staff for another challenging Doc Welt Match. Now to start getting ready for next year!

Inaugural match of the new Guncraft USPSA club, 3rd Sunday of the month. (1st Sunday is still the TBSPC match)

Stage 2

  • Trigger freeze a few times; more than usual, but good splits in general.
  • Clean, 7th out of 48.

Stage 3

  • Tagged the left no-shoot, so made it up.
  • 15th.

Stage 4

  • Too many extras on that small popper on the move. Should’ve just rushed forward then take the left paper going in, then swept right.
  • Clean, 8th.

Stage 5

  • Off balance after rushing forward on the right most position, then off balanced again on the left.
  • Steel 1 for 1.
  • 13th.

Stage 1

  • Good plan, but too many extras (triples).
  • 7th.

Stats: 90A, 26C, 2D, 1NS

The Good

  • Stage 2, 4 and 1
  • Great Alpha count
  • Good splits throughout, target-appropriate.
  • Keeping the gun up and getting it ready before coming into position
  • Gun ran

Needs Improvement

  • Clean match
  • Run faster – more speed, more speed!

Finished 8th out of 48 overall and 2nd out of 7 in PCC.

Stage 4

  • Weak hand touching black dot on wall edge, buttstock on belt to start.
  • Off sequence as I forgot whether I shot that no-shoot from the left side or not.
  • Clean, 17th out of 48.

Stage 1

  • Steel 1 for 1.
  • Clean, 14th.

Stage 2

  • Different plans for this setup and I chose to shoot the middle targets from the right corner and on the move out from the left.
  • Clean, 21st.

Stage 3

  • Fast in the middle and throw 3 at the tux.
  • Good speed throughout, steel 1 for 1.
  • Mike on the tux, maybe should’ve started on it.
  • 17th.

Stats: 61A, 22C, 1D, 1M

The Good

  • Great Alpha count
  • Good splits throughout, target-appropriate.
  • Steel 1 for 1
  • Keeping the gun up and getting it ready before coming into position
  • Gun ran

Needs Improvement

3G Manatee, 6-12-21

June 13, 2021

Open Division

  • Open Edge in .40SW using 155gr Xtreme FN loads.
    • 155gr Xtreme plated flat nose
    • 7.5gr Longshot
    • 1.19OAL
  • AK47 with Tasco red dot, 40rnd mag with Tula/Wolf 7.62×39 and Norma brass cased 7.62×39 FMJ (no steel) ammo
  • DA Vepr 12 – Bushnell Big Dot, DA 12 and 20 round mags, using Remington 1200 and 1330fps, Winchester 1255 loads, and Federal Truball slugs
  • Borrowed Lee’s 18″ Armalite with Vortex 1-10HD for the long range stage

3G Manatee is back after a few months hiatus due to the ammo shortage. Round counts will be low, but it’s good running all 3/4 guns in a match (and not with a PCC).

Stage 3

  • Second to start, and in a hurry, I opt not to run the hatcam.
  • Rifle to start on the left, middle and right, followed by pistol to the same, then end with SG.
  • Haven’t shot the Vepr since January so it’s slow and shaky. The AK, not since February – but I did practice reloads yesterday, just in case.
  • DAV-12 fails to feed, probably just needs to shake off the bugs.
  • 2 FTN; 17th out of 24.

Stage 4

  • A bit quicker on the AK and Vepr, and the DAV-12 runs this time.
  • Pistol seems off with the star, may need to re-check zero.
  • 9th

Stage 1

  • Too many extras with the pistol; definitely need to check zero.
  • DAV-12 hiccups again, but easily remedied.
  • I try out the AK for the 100yd-ish steel and give up on the off-hand. It takes 3 shots supported to figure out the hold – 5 o’clock – then almost 1 for 1 once I get it. Definitely need to zero for 100.
  • 17th

Stage 2

  • 1st round slug hit – wow!
  • I burn the next slug then start on the steel. With the DAV-12 going single shot, I skip the flippers in the middle so I engage them last where the mag becomes more reliable as there are less rounds in it.
  • First clay doesn’t fly (broken) and I get the second.
  • 200 and 300yd steel is 1 for 1.
  • 10th

The Good

  • True 3 gun after months’ break.
  • Shooting the DAV-12 again despite the jams.
  • 1 for 1 with Lee’s rifle for the LR steel.
  • Trying the AK and finding out what it needs.

Needs Improvement

  • Get a shell gauge – DAV12 issues
  • Check AK zero.
  • Check Open Edge zero.

Finished 15th out of 24 and 9th out of 14 in Open.

First ever PCC 2gun Nationals, and I’m working the match after shooting all 11 stages on staff day. We drove out from Tampa on Wednesday, stopped at Americus, GA for the night and got to Talladega, AL early Thursday. Walked the stages to get stage plans down, then more good rest the night before.

First stage of the day and no surprise, I go first for the double stage (5 and 6)…

Stage 6

  • Pistol only.
  • While I thought it was good run, despite extras on the poppers, I’m told of an FTN.
  • 135th out of 224 shooters and 91st out of 132 in Open.

Stage 5

  • PCC only.
  • Took forever to load the 57rnd mag.
  • Good splits on paper, but too many extras on steel.
  • Bad timing on the swingers, a no-shoot on the far right, and I leave a popper standing. Oy.
  • 205th overall and 120th in Open.

Stage 1

  • Pistol only. This is the stage I’d work for the weekend, and after seeing all the different plans, there were better plans than this.
  • Steel needs to be 1 for 1.
  • Everything was scoring ok until a complete miss on the left most upper on the half-tux stack. Granted, this stage ate a lot of people’s lunches, mine included.
  • 152nd overall and 107th in Open.

Stage 2

  • Originally planned with reholstering, I figured it would be quicker not worrying about the pistol falling out.
  • This is a memory stage and good planning allowed for decisive shooting.
  • Still, an FTN but at least only 1 penalty.
  • 79th overall and 52nd in Open. This will be my best stage for the match.

Stage 3

Fast forward unless you want to watch the grass grow…

  • Pistol starts out great and things are going ok up until the first clay targets and the wheels fall off.
  • Long range with the PCC is a no-go. I know I’m really in trouble when I mag change without finishing the front section. It’s going really bad when I expend both 40 round mags and I’m not in my last position.
  • I’ve got big problems if we have more long range with the PCC.
  • 208th overall and 120th in Open. At least it’s not last.

Strange that my PCC is good to go on the numerous small poppers before this, but not clays. So I go to the equipment check range with different ammo from Lee that might be more accurate. It doesn’t connect either on my gun. Plan B is to change guns but still use my ammo. With a call to the RM to request a gun change, my PCC is shelved for Lee’s MBX PCC.

pxl_20210607_222627451

Stage 4

  • So it’s not me or my ammo. Lee’s gun runs my ammo and my ammo can hit far steel and clays.
  • And finally, a clean run – 92nd overall and 61st in Open. Third best stage.

Stage 11

  • Planned so the activated targets would be at rest when I shot them with the pistol.
  • FTN and complete miss on the far paper.
  • 130th overall and 82nd in Open.

Stage 7

  • Sequenced steel so I could shoot the activated targets fully open. By this time, we’re all getting really tired and starting to dig down. It was faster to shoot the maxtraps unactivated but I didn’t want to risk the no-shoots.
  • Shot it as planned, and in correct sequence, but FTN and complete miss again.
  • 129th overall and 82nd in Open.

Stage 8

  • All PCC and more proof my ammo works.
  • Bad timing on the swinger and bobbers; too much waiting.
  • At least it’s clean – 83rd overall and 53rd in Open. Second best stage.

Stage 9

  • More far steel with the PCC.
  • More swingers and waiting.
  • FTN with the PCC – 109th overall and 72nd in Open.

Stage 10

  • Hatcam ran out of juice, no video.
  • More running around, hitting far steel and clays with the PCC, and far paper with the pistol.
  • Finished fighting, with a clean run – 93rd overall and 67th in Open. Fourth best stage.

The Good

  • Stages 2, 4, 8 and 10.
  • Having good friends with zeroed guns.
  • No malfunctions, guns ran.
  • Endurance to go the distance – started shooting at 9, we finish at 7. That’s a long day of shooting and re-shooting.

Needs Improvement

  • Check long range zero or relegate the Gibbz upper to short-medium range duty and get an MBX.
  • Loading with the 57 round mag.
  • More speed more speed!

After the staff match, I was 18th overall. After 2 days and about 200 more shooters, I tumble to 127th. Finished 127th overall and 83rd in Open,

Many thanks to USPSA for a hard, challenging match. Special thanks to the sponsors for supporting the first PCC 2Gun Nationals, specifically: Title sponsor Sig Sauer, and JP Rifles and Berry’s for the certs I was able to snag at the prize table. Thank you also to Vortex and LAPG for the staff package of range bag, pants and shirt.
