Limited Optics Division

STI DVC LO

  • Borrowing Lee P’s STI DVC setup for Limited Optics
  • C-More RTS dot
  • Gas pedal
  • MBX 140mm mags (24, 23rnd)
  • 124gr Xtreme RN loads (4.2gr N320, Fiocchi SPP primers, 1.12 OAL)

N320 loads worked great at the last Ruskin match, so 1k later, trying out the first hundred.

Back issues today that popped up for no reason. Similar to an episode a few years back but this time I can actually still run. It’s getting up from seated that affects me. As long as I’m upright, I’m ok.

Stage 4

  • First to shoot and I’m still looking for targets as I’m called up to the line.
  • First 5 are as planned and as I see the 6th – the one with the no-shot, is the one I hadn’t accounted for.
  • The rest are as planned.
  • Clean; 16th out of 46.

Stage 1

  • Steel 1 for 1 to start.
  • Tight round count and as I move up-left, I motion for the planned reload. Double-clutch as I decide to ditch the reload.
  • Finish up and last steel is 1 for 1.
  • Clean; 11th.

Stage 2

  • Ran this opposite from the rest. Start position is touching a barrel on either end. Starting from the right meant going all the way to the left. But starting from the left didn’t mean going all the way to the right.
  • Shot the first array as fast as possible.
  • Slowed down for the middle, but finished fast.
  • Clean; 16th.

Stage 3

  • Extra on first 3 steel.
  • Middle on the move (kinda).
  • Sweetspot to end.
  • Clean; 12th.

Stats: 69A, 20C, 3D (Previous WAC LO stats: 65A, 22C, 2D, 1M, 1NS)

The Good

  • Clean match.
  • Good A-C ratio.
  • Gun ran. (oiling the gun while holstering at the safe area is now SOP)
  • Working through my back issues.
  • I can run (despite the back).

Needs Improvement

  • Clean match.
  • Need speed on splits and target appropriate splits.
  • More trigger time to get used to the new system.
  • Keep up maintenance on the right leg so I can keep running.
  • Not my gun, but a shorter trigger shoe might be a better fit for my hand.

Finished 11th out of 46 overall and 2nd out of 8 in LO.

PCC HSC 8-20-23

August 20, 2023

  • Lee P’s Kel-Tec Sub 2000

No major matches coming up, just having fun with Lee’s new toy. No videos as the hatcam’s battery wasn’t charged.

Stage 3

  • Start at the long range stage with a gun I’ve never shot before. For fun, right?
  • From the box, 9 75yd steel. Lots of extras.
  • Paper from outside the shoot house.
  • Same steel from the now closer second box plus 4 poppers. More extras.
  • Clean; 8th out of 19.

Stage 4

  • 4 positions: 5 steel at around 50yds and 1 bowling pin (your choice).
  • Getting used to the Kel-Tec, but still some extras.
  • Clean, 6th.

Stage 2

  • Almost the same stage from last week’s USPSA match, without the no-shoots.
  • Modified the plan – instead of the pause midway to the last position for a target, shot it at the last position instead.
  • Clean; 2nd.

Stage 1

  • More far steel and bowling pins. But this time I go almost 1 for 1 (maybe 1 extra?).
  • Run and gun for paper to finish.
  • Clean; 1st.

Stats: Clean match

The Good

  • Getting progressively better through the stages on a new platform. Learning holds (aim low) and technique (pull in).
  • Gun ran.
  • Able to run.

Needs Improvement

  • Practice on small targets at 35+ yards.
  • Keep PT and watching diet for the right knee/leg.

Finished 6th out of 19.

Limited Optics Division

STI DVC LO

  • Borrowing Lee P’s STI DVC setup for Limited Optics
  • C-More RTS dot
  • Gas pedal
  • MBX 140mm mags (24, 23rnd)
  • 124gr Xtreme RN loads (4.2gr WST, Win SPP primers, 1.14 OAL)

First time running LO at HSC. 4 classifiers in, and I’m a ‘C’. Will get my 5th today but doubt it’ll bring it up.

Stage 3

  • Static start, then on the move for the right.
  • Reload, semi on the move for the stack, then finish at the last position.
  • Clean, 5th out of 26.

Stage 4 – Classifier

  • String 1 – 1 per target, freestyle, reload while moving to the next box, 1 per target, strong hand.
  • String 2 – 1 per target, freestyle, reload while moving to the next box, 1 per target, weak hand.
  • Clean; 3rd.

Stage 5

  • Ran this clockwise, while most ran counter-clockwise from the same start position. Felt clockwise allowed more on the move shooting.
  • Steel needs to be 1 for 1.
  • Clean; 8th.

Stage 1

  • The question here was either shoot all the left and right arrays from the corners, or as I did, from 4 positions, using the middle ports. I thought I’d be able to shoot through the ports on the move. Too many, and the ports made for tight windows. In this case, from the sides probably would’ve been faster.
  • Clean; 7th.

Stage 2

  • The path said ‘clockwise’. Some of us thought counter-clockwise was.
  • On the move for everything past the reload.
  • Clean; 9th.

Stats: 111A, 24C, 3D (Previous HSC CO stats: 97A, 9C, 1D)

The Good

  • Clean match.
  • Awesome Alpha-Charlie ratio and Alpha count.
  • Steel 1 for 1.
  • Gun ran.
  • Being able to run.

Needs Improvement

  • Splits need speed.
  • Quicker splits. Need to hit the range and run doubles or Bill Drills.
  • Keep on working to get my head up while reloading with the gun up.
  • Quicker reloads – I unload and reload on the move. I’m a few steps in as the mag clears the gun and I insert a fresh mag while moving. Need to practice performing everything in the first step or 2 (max) before moving.
  • PT the right leg for continued improvement and strengthening.

Finished 7th out of 26 overall and 1st out of 6 in LO.

  • 16″ PWS Upper
    • Meopta 1-4 primary
    • YHM brake
    • My 55gr loads:
      • Berrys 55gr, 24.1gr TAC, bulk re-spec’d brass, SRP
  • MP15 lower – JP trigger, JP SCSS, Magpul MOE stock
  • Magpul 40 and Troy 32rnd mags

RIA VR80

  • Magpul K grip and Luth stock
  • Holosun 510c primary and Venom offset
  • 24 and 11 round mags (Taccom and TF extended)
  • Federal Target and Winchester AA (1200fps) birdshot
  • Protective sleeve to shield from gases

VR80, STI DVC, PWS and NF18″ oiled. Fresh 55gr loads made the night before.

Brought 2 rifles – the usually suppressed PWS for the short stuff and the 18″ for the long.

Stage 1

  • Pistol – extras on steel, clean run.
  • Picked up the rifle and forgot it was unloaded. D’oh!
  • 1 for 1 on the KYL from the hood.
  • 9 for the 5 from the trunk. Found myself holding – and losing – my breath.
  • 16th out of 38.

Stage 2

  • 5 LR steel from the tank trap plus a 400yd bonus. 1 for 1 but lost track of the targets, skipped 1, re-engaged another.
  • 10rnd mag for the SG, 1 for 1.
  • Clean; 19th.

Stage 3

  • Same plan for everyone, with the rifle.
  • Option to shoot the steel closer but strong hand only. No one chose this option in our squad. Extras on the far steel expected, but needs to be 1 for 1.
  • Clean; 14th.

Stage 4

  • Rifle as planned.
  • Pistol 1 extra on the small platerack.
  • SG using the 24rnd with AAs. 1 for 1 for the steel, 2 for the first swinger and 3 for the second.
  • Clean; 9th.

Stage 5

  • Rifle to start; no issues, clean.
  • 9 for the SG but I use the 24rnd mag with AAs again for testing. 1 for 1, no issues.
  • Didn’t get the dot on the draw hence the long pause. 1 for 1 on the static and 2 for the spinner.
  • Clean; 14th.

The Good

  • VR80 RAN!
    • AAs in the 24rnd Taccom extended mag
    • Federals in the 10rnd mags
  • General rifle work.
  • Pistol work.
  • 55gr loads continue to run.
  • Able to run.

Needs Improvement

  • Offset dot for PWS system. Specially since the Meopta’s front cap broke so now I can’t use it to quickly occlude the tube for short work while magnified.
  • QD sling mount for PWS upper.
  • Continue leg PT for more dynamic movement (ex. exiting a van).

Finished 12th out of 38 overall and 4th out of 14 in Open.

  • Gas pedal
  • MBX 140mm mags (24, 23rnd)
  • 124gr Xtreme RN loads (4.2gr WST, Win SPP primers, 1.14 OAL)

Working on moving faster and do the non-shooting tasks quicker.

Stage 4

  • First to shoot and the plan isn’t locked in. At least I got the position right. I planned to go right to left, but leave the closest for last so I could retreat on it and be in position for the first on the right. That didn’t happen and I shot the left side as I saw them. Made it work.
  • Clean; 21st out of 45.

Stage 1

  • Ran as planned, hit my reload.
  • Extras on 2 steel.
  • Clean; 23rd.

Stage 2

  • On the move for the second target so I’m in position for the one through the port (kinda).
  • Come in on the wide open target then sweep right.
  • Run to the last position and I get too cocky and go too fast, nailing the no-shoot.
  • M-NS; 30th.

Stage 3

  • Left to right to start, on the move for the middle 2, the first 2 on the right, then finish.
  • Clean; 16th.

Stats: 65A, 22C, 2D, 1M, 1NS (Previous WAC LO stats: 64A, 28C, 1D)

The Good

  • Good A-C ratio.
  • Gun ran. (oiled the gun while holstering)
  • Testing myself to go fast (even if I do crash).
  • I can run.

Finished 20th out of 45 overall and 2nd out of 8 in LO.

  • Gas pedal
  • MBX 140mm mags
    • Blue, purple basepads – 23rnd
    • Gold (2) – 24rnd, reloadable
  • 124gr Xtreme RN loads (4.2gr WST, Fiocchi SPP primers, 1.10 OAL)

Made some fresh loads yesterday, using Fiocchi SPP primers. We’ll see how they run.

After some battery issues last Friday night, cleaned and oiled the DVC.

Resolved to work on running faster and moving quicker when not shooting.

Stage 2

  • Couldn’t find the dot at the start.
  • Ran as planned, hit my reload, steel 1 for 1.
  • Shot 3 on the swinger, 2 hit.
  • Clean; 23rd out of 75.

Stage 3

  • Mag in gun, but empty chamber to start.
  • Ran as planned, steel 1 for 1.
  • Clean, 26th.

Stage 4

  • 1 extra on the first steel. Rest is 1 for 1.
  • Quick splits on the up close, and hit my reload.
  • Clean; 38th.

Stage 5

  • Classifier goes well up until the same malfunction from last Friday.
  • Clean; 50th.

Stage 6

  • Aside from my WST loads, made some based on N320
    • 4.1gr N320
    • 1.10 OAL
    • Fiocchi SPP
  • 3 per target required.
  • Gun runs and the N320 loads feels good.
  • Clean; 19th.

Stage 1

  • Back to the WST loads and I can feel the difference. Or is it bias?
  • Ran as planned, but extra on the steel.
  • Left-side port: felt slow approaching as I was calculating when to shoot. I need that calculation on planning so I just go to the spot.
  • Clean; 36th.

Stats: 118A, 29C, 2D (Previous GC LO stats: 102A, 32C, 6D, 2M, 2NS)

The Good

  • Clean match.
  • Great A-C ratio.
  • Fiocchi primers good to go.
  • N320 loads good to go.
  • Right leg good, able to run.

Needs Improvement

  • More trigger time with the DVC LO for quicker splits.
  • Keep up with diet and PT for the right leg.

Hot day, but managed to keep cool. Bugs were bad today at Guncraft – normally there aren’t any. Finished 30th out of 75 overall and 6th of 16 in Limited Optics.

Friday night match. Walk/run Thursday to work on fitness and getting to move/run faster. Striving to move faster and do the non-shooting tasks quicker.

Stage 4

  • Right to left and I miss the left-most steel. Wasn’t fast enough to get the whole array so the ‘soft-cover’ bobber gets in the way (visually). There was actually 3 hits on the left paper. Should’ve save the left paper for later, along with the middle bobber.
  • Waiting on the middle bobber.
  • Right side on retreat, then finish.
  • 8th out of 34.

Stage 1

  • Good start on the no-shoots, then on the move for the open 3 on the left.
  • 1 extra on the small steel.
  • Reload, and run to the last position while taking the first while coming in.
  • Clean; 12th.

Stage 2

  • Shot as planned, with too many extras on steel. I realize this so I reload moving up.
  • Better plan would’ve been to take the steel closer by going left-right-left down the path vs my right-left-right.
  • Clean; 22nd.

Stage 3

  • Invariably, these quick stages expose equipment issues. 2 malfunctions – dead trigger, had to rack to clear (battery?). New springs in both the gun and the mag.
  • Clean; 25th.

Stats: 64A, 28C, 1D (Previous WAC LO stats: 60A, 21C, 3D, 2M)

The Good

  • Good A-C ratio.
  • I can run.

Needs Improvement

  • On my Open gun, I oiled it prior to a match. It shouldn’t be any different with this 2011. Probably what caused the malfunctions on S3.
  • Clean match.
  • Need speed on splits and target appropriate splits.
  • More trigger time to get used to the new system.
  • Keep up maintenance on the right leg so I can keep running.
  • Not my gun, but a shorter trigger shoe might be a better fit for my hand.

Keeping on…

Stage 4

  • As fast as I could go.
  • Clean; 9th out of 32.

Stage 1

  • I begin transitioning after the first shot and it goes into the barrel, so makeup.
  • A bit flustered, I continue. Steel 1 for 1.
  • Hit the planned reload and finish. Steel 1 for 1 as well.
  • Clean; 17th.

Stage 2

  • I start on the right so I can start on the steel. Tight round count so if I have extras on the steel, I can perform a reload. If I start on the left and end on the steel, I might be faced with a standing reload.
  • Steel 1 for 1. No reload needed.
  • Middle on the move, then finish off what’s left.
  • I take my time on the last no-shoot, but none connects. 2M.
  • 2M; 21st.

Stage 3

  • Start on the left again as after the first 3 on the move, I’m indexed on the next 2.
  • The weird one was the one from the corner followed by the uprange run.
  • Clean; 13th.

Stats: 60A, 21C, 3D, 2M (Previous WAC LO stats: 62A, 26C, 1D)

The Good

  • Good A-C ratio.

  • All mags work.

Needs Improvement
